NEW YORK — In less than two weeks, there will be more than 500 new players signing up to play in the NFL.
But a new study shows that, for the first time, there’s a growing demand for a new set of tools to help players understand the science behind the game.
“There’s a lot of information out there and we have to be able to be more creative,” said Adam Kranz, a research professor in the department of economics at the University of Notre Dame.
“And if we can find a way to get more people interested in learning, that’s a good thing.”
The research was presented at the Society for Human Resource Management’s annual conference on Wednesday in San Francisco.
The conference is co-hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the U-M.K.F.K., a research organization that studies labor economics.
The findings of the research, titled “How to become a player: A critical analysis of the science of football” and funded by the National Football League, were released last week by Kranze and the American Economic Association.
They examined more than 1,200 studies in order to understand what the public thinks about the science and what it is teaching them.
The studies included a wide variety of topics, from the NFL’s preseason to the science-based research on how players develop and develop.
The first question Kranzi posed to the participants was whether they wanted to know more about the study’s methodology and how it was being done.
“I’m going to be honest, it’s been a lot more than that,” he said.

Kranz said that his study was not a survey.
It was conducted in a way that allowed the research to be shared with the public as it was, so that the research would be available to anyone who wanted to use it.
“Our study was a combination of interviews and online survey questions.
So we weren’t just looking at people who were interested in the study.
We were looking at anyone who was interested in science, who wanted more information on this topic.

“So, if we’re looking at players in the U, they might not be interested in a lot about how the game works,” Kranzz said.
That’s because the study looked at how the players responded to specific questions, such as how much they would pay to see a player perform a specific action.
The answers to those questions were based on the answers given by players in previous studies, Kranzer said.
Kranzz also used data from the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index to show the public’s views on the science.
He said that while the results of his study are preliminary, he thinks that it’s a useful starting point to gauge the public interest in the research.
“When people say, ‘Oh, the NFL doesn’t do science’ or ‘I’m not going to get involved because it’s too hard to do research, or it’s not fair for me,’ it’s really a disservice to the sport,” Krenz said.
“We’re not looking to make a case that there are certain things that are inherently unfair to the players.
We’re looking to show that this is really something that people are interested in, that there’s interest in science and that there is a need for it.”
The survey also included questions about how they would like to be paid, what the research is proving, and how they felt about their salaries.
There were questions on how many players had played in the league in the past and how many were playing now.
“If you’re a coach and you’re looking for a way for you to teach your players how to play the game, that would be really helpful,” Krasz said, “but the more people who are interested, the more we can make this possible.”
Krenz is also working on a book about the NFL that will be released in 2018.
He says the goal of the book is to help people understand the importance of science, the value of the game in society, and the benefits of being a professional football player.
“People want to know about what it takes to be successful in the game,” he added.
