What the teachers at a Brooklyn school want from the world

Teachers at a New York school want to hear from students about the history of slavery and racism in America.
And what they want is a lesson in how the words they use are often used to justify the history and actions of their school district.
The school, where the teacher is teaching history, has become a popular venue for teachers to engage in these kinds of conversations, but it is a classroom where teachers are also confronting students about racism.
And it is one where the students are learning from the same teacher that has been vilified and accused of having a racist past, said Jennifer Rinaldi, a teacher who was raised in the district.
I think it is important for all of us to be involved, she said.
And, as a result, the school has been able to make a difference, Rinali said.
The students at this New York City school are also learning about their parents and teachers.
Rinaldi said she hopes that by making this conversation a part of the classroom, they can learn from the past and that we will never forget.
It’s not something I think they will ever forget, Rialdi said.
I hope they can remember it.
She hopes that when they return to school, they will be able to say, I was there.
And that’s what we need to do.
